How do tank mixers work?

Magnetic mixers and rotary jet mixers have different operating principles.

Rotary jet mixers

Rotary jet mixer nozzles feed the liquid, gas, or powder into the base liquid in the tank. The nozzles rotate around both horizontal and vertical axes in a 360° movement. This three-dimensional rotation enables fast, efficient mixing of the injected liquid, gas, or powder without requiring batch rotation. A circulation loop enables liquid to be pumped from the bottom of the tank and back into the mixer. For faster mixing requirements, several rotary jet mixers can be installed in series.

Magnetic mixers

A magnetic mixer has a radial impeller installed inside the tank. Due to the torque from a magnetic coupling, the impeller rotates, mixing the fluid inside the tank. The patented design of the levitating impeller enables dry running, maximizing yield by mixing down to the last drop. It also ensures full drainability of the process fluids and the free flow of Cleaning-in-Place me

How does the LeviMag® tank mixer work?

A radial turbine installed inside the tank is rotated via the torque from a magnetic coupling. This creates a mixing of the fluid inside the tank. The patented levitated design of the impeller makes the mixer fully drainable and able to run dry – hence it can mix to the last drop, securing maximum yield.

The unique design of the Alfa Laval magnetic coupling always ensures the levitation of the impeller. This enables the complete drainability of process fluids and the free flow of CIP liquid and steam around all parts of the mixer, ensuring a thorough cleaning. Impeller levitation also eliminates axial wear.

LeviMag® magnetic mixer technology

Mix down to the last drop thanks to the four-wing levitating impeller of the Alfa Laval LeviMag magnetic mixer. Minimizing wear and ensuring drainability is easy due to no direct contact between the bearing surfaces and no dead zones. The Alfa Laval LeviMag® magnetic drive mixer uses a patented levitating impeller to ensure efficient mixing and maximum product yield.

Rotary Jet Mixer

The Alfa Laval Rotary Jet Mixer effectively handles liquid mixing, gas dispersion, powder mixing, and tank cleaning while reducing mixing time, energy consumption and costs. Patented technology based on proven Rotary Jet Head technology, it provides quick, efficient and uniform mixing without any batch rotation or the use of baffles. It also ensures greater process flexibility, making it easy to switch to new product formulations with diverse viscosities, densities and volumes.

Effective mixing and reduced processing time

  • Fast, effective liquid mixing performance in tanks
  • Efficient gas and powder dispersion
  • Can be used as tank cleaning machine
  • Unmatched, cost-effective mixing performance
  • Simplified, hygienic design with modest investment

The Alfa Laval Rotary Jet Mixer is designed for liquid mixing, gas dispersion (aeration, deaeration, carbonation), and powder mixing in process and storage vessels across the dairy, food, beverage, brewery, healthcare, home and personal care and biotechnology industries. When the tank is empty, the Rotary Jet Mixer also acts as a superb Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) system, saving water, cleaning media and energy compared to using a spray ball CIP system.

How does the Rotary Jet Mixer work?

Operating principle

The Rotary Jet Mixers are positioned under the liquid surface. Liquid is fed through the nozzles of the Rotary Jet Mixer. To achieve optimal circulation within the tank, the system uses a closed circulation loop. Two or four nozzles rotate around both the horizontal and vertical axes. This double rotation enables the jets to reach the entire tank volume, providing fast, efficient mixing of the injected liquid, gas or powder. For faster mixing requirements, several Rotary Jet Mixers can be installed in series.

Tank cleaning included

The Rotary Jet Mixer does double duty. After completion of the mixing process, the mixer’s jet nozzles can be used for spraying cleaning liquids in the tank to effectively clean tank surfaces.

Skid mounted unit

Three different pre-engineered Skid Mounted Pump Units are available to supplement the portfolio of Rotary Jet Mixers. The three units available come with 7.5 kW, 11 kW, or 15 kW pumps. The unit is mounted on a stainless steel frame and consists of the following Alfa Laval components: an energy-efficient LKH centrifugal pump, a variable frequency drive, piping, two pressure gauges, manual LKB-2 butterfly valves at the inlet and at the outlet, and a LKB-2 drain valve.

Application examples

Beer fermentation

The Rotary Jet Mixer is used for mixing in beer fermenters. Applying forced mixing in beer fermenters reduces processing times by up to 30%. As a result, fermentation capacity is maximised and reduction in operational costs is achieved.

Mixing beverages

Applying Rotary Jet Mixers optimizes production processes in the beverage industry. The mixers are used for different beverage applications such as mixing beverages containing fruit pulp, dissolving flavours, aspartame and other powders, and for tank cleaning (CIP). A single mixer can be used for several different operations in the same tank – for instance for liquid mixing, deaeration, carbonation and dissolving of powders.

Deaeration

The Rotary Jet Mixer can be used for effective deaeration. Minimizing the oxygen content in liquid food products like soft drinks, beer and edible oil leads to extended shelf life and improved taste stability.

Product range

The Rotary Jet Mixers are available in four different models (IM 10, IM 15, IM 20, IM 25). They are designed for tank volumes between 100 and 800,000 liters in size and capable of handling re-circulation flow rates up to 90 m³/h.

Unmatched mixing performance

In many applications the Rotary Jet Mixer provides the fastest and most efficient mixing results. It also handles gas dispersion (aeration, deaeration, carbonation), powder mixing and cleaning in place (CIP). Its patented rotary jet mixing technology is based on rotary jet head technology, which has been modified to handle mixing of liquids, gas and powder. Rotary Jet Mixers can be used in tanks between 100 and 800,000 liters in size.

To meet your mixing needs, Alfa Laval also offers a range of agitators and a magnetic coupled mixer.

Faster, effective mixing

When using the Rotary Jet Mixer, the capacity can be increased, resulting in greater productivity, higher product quality and improved utilization of process plant resources.

Handles multiple applications

The Rotary Jet Mixer helps reduce capital expenditures and operating expenses while achieving fast and efficient mixing. A single Rotary Jet Mixer can handle liquid mixing, gas dispersion and powder dispersion applications – plus tank cleaning – without requiring separate equipment for each process and thereby delivering significant savings.

Effective, simplified design

The system offers savings in tank and supporting structure because the motor and pump can be placed on the floor. The Rotary Jet Mixer, being placed under the liquid surface, is a hydraulically balanced system which does not create any significant loads on the tank. Its easy-to-install design also facilitates retrofitting of existing tanks.

Making a good thing even better

A number of pre-engineered Skid Mounted Pump Units are available to complement the Rotary Jet Mixers. In addition to a Rotary Jet Mixer, the end-users also require a pump and instrumentation for their mixing system. To make it easy for them, a number of pre-engineered units with all the necessary equipment have been designed. For end-users, this will save time and resources as they can bypass engineering and procurement. All they have to do is connect two pipes, do the electrical wiring, set up the variable frequency drive – and they are ready to go.
